Wim Nauwelaerts is a partner in the Brussels office, leading Alston & Bird’s European Privacy, Cyber & Data Strategy Team. Wim has over 20 years of experience working with global companies on their data protection, privacy, and cybersecurity needs, including General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) readiness, data transfer, data security and breach requirements, and compliance training.
Wim regularly assists in creating and implementing critical global privacy projects for clients in a range of sectors, with particular experience with life sciences, technology, and new media clients. His work includes developing data flow maps to demonstrate the life cycle of personal data; conducting privacy risk assessments; developing policies, procedures, forms, and notices to facilitate compliant data collection and handling; developing comprehensive privacy trainings and programs; assisting with privacy and data security due diligence in corporate transactions; developing vendor management programs; drafting and negotiating data processing and sharing contracts; developing comprehensive cross-border data transfer strategies; providing advice on whistleblower hotlines, employee monitoring, and new media and technologies; assisting with data breach readiness planning and prevention of cyber intrusions; assisting with data breach reporting requirements; and representing clients before data protection authorities.
